Week of 08/28/09

This Week‘s Crappie Fishing Tip‘s from Dale Beauchamp
USEING THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT!
Much to often most of us anglers use oversized rods, line and jigs when fishing for crappie, depending on application chose to pursue. I recommend an ultralight spinning rod with a regular-sized reel and 4-6 pound high-quality test line pending on your approach. Key to landing big crappie is having that drag set, allowing you to play both the weight and fish as he peels the line from the spool of your rod while keeping just the write amount of tension to bare the weight and from him breaking you off. You will find that lite line in those categories’ help out with not only being able to feel the bite, but staying in constant contact as well. Having contact or being able to see your line can be the most critical issue. Example, when shooting dock’s and low light conditions, shot placement will be a key factor here being able to see were you shoot your jig or bait can determine your catch ratio. Another would be once a crappie responds to the action or presentation of your bait, something as little as him running off with your line or your line going slack, with out being able to visibly see your line, makes it even harder to detect when you make contact with the fish.. Having line that you can see, will make all the difference in filling your live well or keeping your stringer full.
JIG’S OR LIVE BAIT
I prefer to use a simple Hand-Tied feathered jig, such as any of the BNB Crappie Jigs, Or Ozark Secrets tube jigs, tipped with a crappie nibble in one of my favorite flavors if you will chart/metal/flake. amount of undulation coming from the tail of the jig can make a huge difference. I also recommend placing a attractant, such as one like I use, called Smelly Jelly on the chore of the chenille body. This will provide you with a edge when things get slow. A lot of times more times than none, crappie sometimes depending on several factors tend to swim up on your bait and nose it. Example when I was living up in Wisconsin, we used to wait for the chance to get out on the ice to pursue active crappie and bluegill’s. What we learned through having underwater cameras is that the fish weren’t gone, they were simply write underneath us and nosing our baits. The ones that used some form of attractant wind up enticing these fish to respond and turn those sniffers into bitters. Sometimes even just changing up the offerings and being creative will make all the difference once again. Now another question still remains, wither to use live bait or not! Well I can tell you this, there will be those days were nothing you throw at them will work and have to hit them with a small to medium size minnow. For me I always carry minnows were I am fishing a tournament or guide trip or something as simple from fishing from the shoreline.
REMEMBER THIS!
“The idea that crappies aren’t biting on a given day is just a myth. There are always crappies biting somewhere in any lake. You just have to find them. Keep in mind that crappie two are structure orientated fish. They relate to all types of cover that serve as ambush points around feeding principles.Good example on places to find crappie, or even other game fish as well would be around bridge pillars or column support structure. These areas of interest support high values of aquatic life and some type of plant life growth .Another would be to target moderate to deep water brush piles.
